Age of Empires IV: Raiders of the North is scheduled for October 29, 2026. Vikings and Scots arrive as full civilizations, each with unique buildings, economic systems and armies. The launch is accompanied by Update 17.0, although unlock times can differ by store and region.

The Vikings favour early initiative and raids. Their Longhouse helps support production, Heroic Sagas reward particular achievements, and Sacred Groves encourage players to fight for map control. The aim is to combine mobility with a stable economy rather than sacrificing an entire army to a risky attack.

The Scots offer a different approach. Highland Cattle and Fishponds support food production, Tower Houses strengthen defensive positions, and the Mustering Hall helps shape military development. Update 17.0 also broadens Crucible, including a two-player cooperative option.

Starting with the Vikings

Keep villagers and production working while scouting exposed resources and access routes. Small raids can force an opponent to move workers without requiring a decisive battle.

Use Heroic Sagas when they fit your strategy, not at the expense of basic resources. Try a practice match first to understand the Longhouse and the timing of your units.

Playing the Scots and preparing for the update

Defend important food sources, use Tower Houses selectively, and explore the contrast between Highlands and Lowlands units at the Mustering Hall.

The patch affects maps and balance. The official update warns that old saved games and replays will not remain compatible, so finish pending matches before updating.
